WHAT WE ARE DOING
According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation's 2021 Kids Count Data Book, the state of New Mexico is 49th in overall child well-being, 48th in economic well-being and 50th in education.
Our children need all the support our communities can give if they are going to be lifted out of poverty and academic underachievement.
WHY WE DO IT
Teacher vacancies are at an all-time high in New Mexico. The answer is sitting right in front of us in our high school and college classrooms. "Growing our own" makes sense. Most teachers teach within 20 miles of where they went to school. Contrary to what the media tells us, 90% of teachers say they are satisfied with their jobs, in line with teachers around the world. Programs like Tutors to Teachers give high school and college students an opportunity to work directly with children so that they can feel the impact could have on children as teachers. Tutors with Tutors to Teachers are involved in an internship-type experience because they are trained, nurtured, and supported.
